Instant Attraction: 1993 Dubbo PHAA National Champtionship ShowGreg and Sam formed first met at a horse show of course! The Appaloosa Nationals, this meeting was to form the basis of a solid successful relationship both in and out of the horse show ring. Over the next 5 years or so the duo concentrated their efforts on general performance events, with success at the State and National level in halter, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, trail, and western riding across the APHA, AQHA and Appaloosa industries. Horses of note include: Lone Star Trinity Chinook, Lynway How Sweet A Saint, WJ Oh Brother, Instant Attraction (pictured to right), Instant Glory and Currajong Triple Watch to name only a few.

Sam & Rocky

In the year 1990 Greg started looking for “that bit of extra excitement” Cutting was then next endeavour. The pair purchased the mighty little horse Poco Gay Bar and for the next year Greg became a force to be reckoned with at the South Eastern Queensland cutting events. It was while showing cutters the pair became interested in bloodlines realising the importance of mare power taking to heart a quote from noted horse trainer Robbie Hodgeman “it’s the training that gets the horse to the finals – but the breeding that aspires them win it!”

Tweed Phillipa Chex Thus it was that Poco Gay Bar was sold and the mare Tweed Phillipa Chex (pictured to the left & below) purchased. Having been previously started on a cow all intentions were for her to be the next cutter in the family. Fate and Phillipa had other ideas and this was not to be! Greg’s long time friend and mentor Wayne Judge suggested that Phillipa might make a reiner so displaying single minded determination, Greg set about making this happen, and along the way he found a new “bit of excitement” the sport of reining!

As in 1992 the NRHA of Australia was not as active as it is today Greg and Sam headed back to the general performance world, showing Touch Of Spectacular in hunter and amateur western pleasure and Phillipa in Reining events. Once again success followed with Sam taking many victories the hunter classes and Greg dominating the reining events at AQHA shows.

Greg & Phillippa turning aroundGreg’s first real taste of NRHA showing was at the 1993 NRHA Futurity show in the Non Pro Derby where he and Phillipa were awarded Reserve Champion in the Non Pro Derby event, taking home their first NRHA pay check of $300! Greg was hooked, back to the 1994 NRHA futurity show and no mistakes and the Championship buckle in the Non Pro Derby once again on Phillipa. During this time some great friendships were formed, many still strong today. Two people in particular are Rod Osborne and Glenn Wyse greatest adversaries in the show pen and good friends out of it!

Needless to say Sam’s hunter horse was sold and Winderadeen Pickalitestar was purchased. Over the next 2 years horse showing was put on the backburner as properties were bought and developed, while Greg also concentrated on his Electrical Contracting Business, often working away from home. In 1997 Greg and Sam welcomed another addition to Smith’s Reiners, their daughter Tyler into the world. Although the showing side of the horse operation was quiet the horse breeding side had stepped up a notch with mares such as Dolly Doc, Yulgilbar Glamour Chex, Yulgilbar Fantasia and Winderadeen Peppy Chic were purchased and age permitting subsequently bred to the highest quality stallions available.

The rest they say is history, Sam eventually ended up showing Reiners albeit spasmodically, becoming Rockie of the year in 2002 and Greg went on to become NRHA Australia’s leading money earning Non Pro and Eighth over all in all time money earning riders having won in excess of $43,000 in cash, not to mention the 2005 NRHA Open Futurity Championship. The breeding side of the business has also proved successful beyond Greg and Sam's expectations.

It’s been a wonderful ride, makes you wonder what’s in store for the future!
