In the year 1990 Greg started looking for “that bit of extra excitement” Cutting was then next endeavour. The pair purchased the mighty little horse Poco Gay Bar and for the next year Greg became a force to be reckoned with at the South Eastern Queensland cutting events. It was while showing cutters the pair became interested in bloodlines realising the importance of mare power taking to heart a quote from noted horse trainer Robbie Hodgeman “it’s the training that gets the horse to the finals – but the breeding that aspires them win it!”
As in 1992 the NRHA of Australia was not as active as it is today Greg and Sam headed back to the general performance world, showing Touch Of Spectacular in hunter and amateur western pleasure and Phillipa in Reining events. Once again success followed with Sam taking many victories the hunter classes and Greg dominating the reining events at AQHA shows.
Needless to say Sam’s hunter horse was sold and Winderadeen Pickalitestar was purchased. Over the next 2 years horse showing was put on the backburner as properties were bought and developed, while Greg also concentrated on his Electrical Contracting Business, often working away from home. In 1997 Greg and Sam welcomed another addition to Smith’s Reiners, their daughter Tyler into the world. Although the showing side of the horse operation was quiet the horse breeding side had stepped up a notch with mares such as Dolly Doc, Yulgilbar Glamour Chex, Yulgilbar Fantasia and Winderadeen Peppy Chic were purchased and age permitting subsequently bred to the highest quality stallions available.
The rest they say is history, Sam eventually ended up showing Reiners albeit spasmodically, becoming Rockie of the year in 2002 and Greg went on to become NRHA Australia’s leading money earning Non Pro and Eighth over all in all time money earning riders having won in excess of $43,000 in cash, not to mention the 2005 NRHA Open Futurity Championship. The breeding side of the business has also proved successful beyond Greg and Sam's expectations.
It’s been a wonderful ride, makes you wonder what’s in store for the future!
